A* Creative in English at GCSE

WHAT YOU'LL FIND IN THIS ANTHOLOGY

This collection of recent English G.C.S.E. students’ work consists of both their creative writing and their analytical responses to texts studied.  All of these pieces have been adjudged by the English Department, as well as the relevant exam board, as being demonstrative of A* work.

More specifically, in terms of creative writing, you will find 8 short stories, as well as 3 separate descriptions of a chosen scene; be it an airport terminal or a music venue.

Overall, the students selected for this publication show just how amazing children can be at formulating extended pieces of writing when they have a point to make, are taught well and then trusted to run with what they believe to be right.  They all show a very coherent understanding of the nuances of words and their multi-layered meaning, as well as the power of precise English to shape a person’s opinion, world view or indeed, transport us into other worlds, times and dreams, all in time to be back for dinner!

The English Department sincerely hope you enjoy the read.

Kind Regards,

Ryan Thomas,

Head of Department,

THE SHORT STORIES AND DESCRIPTIVE PIECES

Here you shall find a series of stories written by our students when given exam-board-assigned generic titles.  In this section you will also find descriptive pieces where the emphasis is on creating a sense of place rather than a narrative to be followed.

One story transports us to Orion, a world of clairvoyants; another will let us meet an angel; yet another will take us to a dystopia where flesh-eating zombies have a conscience and yet other stories involve the gritty and unpleasant underbelly of society in the form of hijacked buses and police corruption.  We even have a couple of stories where entities, poltergeists or, in short, evil lurks just behind the veil.  So by all means, please read on to be transported elsewhere for a few moments.
